Why Do We Learn What We Learn?

Most students disagree with how the education system is set up, however when asked how the government determines the curriculum for public schools most students weren't aware of how their education is shaped. I had the opportunity to ask some questions about the New York State's Department of Education from the Director of Education Finance, Brian Cechnicki.

Even though he doesn't work directly in the department that constructs the curriculum he was able to shed a little light on the process. Mr. Cechnicki stated that "there are experts hired in the department, working with other experts hired in the department, working with other experts in the field and teachers, and administrators. The curricula aren't all imposed by the state, rather there are standards that schools need to meet, and in many areas we offer suggested curricula, but districts and the individual teachers still have the flexibility to create their own, within the state's standards."
