What's Up With School Lunch?

Is there a reasonable explanation as to why students are unhappy with school lunches? For the past couple of weeks I have sought out the answers to this question. When asked about their complaints about school lunch several aspects of the lunch were repeated; students said:

  • the portions are too small - I finish my lunch and I'm still hungry;

  • the food selection is too limiting - it seems like chicken is the main option most days; and

  • the food lacks flavor, it's kind of bland

While noting these "problems" with school lunch, students did not blame SSCS's dedicated and kind cafeteria staff; instead, one name kept coming up: Michelle Obama.

When I asked some of the middle schoolers to share their thoughts on school lunch, most said that they usually bring there lunch because they didn't like what was being served that day or sometimes it wasn't enough.

So the question I am trying to answer is are we getting enough food in our schools lunches? According to Michelle Obama we are, she says it's all about portion control and obese children, but my stomach half way through the day is telling me otherwise. Since when is it okay to feed myself, a 200 pound 5,10 boy the same as a 40 pound kindergartener? The truth is that it's not. We the student body here at SSCS are telling you please we need more. So please cafeteria staff and Michelle Obama, please put a few more pieces of meat on our trays.
